Nina Cassian was born in 1924 in Galati, Romania, and has published more than fifty books. She is a poet, composer, journalist, film critic, and translator of Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Christian Morgenstern, Iannis Ritsos, Paul Celan, and others. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, New England Review, and American Poetry Review. Exiled from Romania in 1985, she lives in New York City.
